Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focus on grappling, with emphasis on ground fighting. It was derived from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan Judo in the early 20th century.

BJJ is based on the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend him/herself against a bigger, stronger assailant using leverage and proper techniques, most notably, submission holds (joint-locks and chokeholds).

Training consists mostly of sparring (commonly referred to as 'rolling') and live drilling. One can train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for self defense, grappling tournaments and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competition.

As Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is growing in popularity worldwide, several Kanreikai schools now offer specific training in BJJ. It is an essential complement to karate training for those interested in the practice of Mixed Martial Arts.
