Frequently Asked Questions About Karate

Q1. How do I know if karate is right for my child?

Karate is like any other sport, in that, you will quickly know if your child likes it or not. If he comes home talking about it enthusiastically, if he practices at home, or if he is pushing you to get out the door on the day of the class, then you know that it is right for him. You know your child, and can recognize the signs when he is enjoying an activity.

Q2. How young do kids start?

We generally recommend that children be at least 5 years old, so kindergarten level. This ensures that they are used to a structured teaching environment. However, many kids do not yet have the attention span required for a full hour class. If this is the case, we advise parents not to push them and bring them back at a later date. In order to see if they can follow the class you can try one or two classes free of charge.

Q3. My child liked it in the beginning but is losing interest

There could be many reasons why your child is losing interest and it is important to talk with them about it. Some reasons may not even be related to karate: for example, their friends may be doing other activities etc. If you feel that your child is not progressing or is losing interest, do not hesitate to  discuss the situation with the instructor.

Q4. How does one advance through the belt levels?

Karate is about personal development and not everyone progresses at the same pace. At World Kanreikai, we have are pre-established requirements that apply to all students (including kids) for each belt level. Our instructors recognize when students are working hard and generally reward their effort by promoting them. Most students, children or adults, have no difficulty advancing normally through the belt levels.
